Is The Valley a war novel, or a mystery, or what?

It's neither and both.  I tried to write a book that could be read and enjoyed entirely as a mystery-thriller, or as a character study with a particular military theme (the heavy weight of blameworthiness and shame that is carried by all military leaders, and which breaks some), or as an allegorical novel whose overt mystery structure is built around a historical theme (the history of Westerners in Afghanistan).
